In short
- Korea is near-cashless. Once you have an ARC, bank account and Korean phone, you tap to pay everywhere with Kakao Pay, Naver Pay or Toss.
- Google Maps barely works here — use Naver Map or Kakao Map for navigation and transit.
- KakaoTalk is essential — it's messaging, payments, taxis and even official notices all in one. There's no real substitute.
- The recurring gotcha: your name must match exactly across ARC, bank and phone, or verification fails.
Korea runs on apps to a degree that surprises everyone. Cards and cash work, but daily life — paying, navigating, ordering, messaging — flows through a handful of super-apps. Here's the stack that actually matters.
Payments: the big three
| App | Best for |
|---|---|
| Kakao Pay | Everyday tap-to-pay (QR) and splitting bills — built into KakaoTalk, so everyone already has it. The default for offline payments. |
| Naver Pay | Online shopping, especially anything on Naver — points and cashback in the Naver ecosystem. |
| Toss | Fast bank-to-bank transfers and seeing a real-time balance; clean, simple interface. |
Most residents end up using all three: Kakao Pay for in-person, Naver Pay for shopping, Toss for transfers. When a coworker says "send me your 카카오페이," they mean your KakaoTalk ID.
The essential apps
Install on day one (work without ARC)
- KakaoTalk — messaging + payments + more. Korea's digital backbone; friends, work, reservations, delivery updates and some government notices all flow through it.
- Naver Map / Kakao Map — navigation and transit. Google Maps is crippled in Korea by data-export rules (vague directions, missing places), so these are non-negotiable. Many people keep both and pick whichever routes better.
- Papago (or Google Translate) — Korean translation, with camera mode for menus and signs.
- Subway Korea / transit apps — clear metro maps, times and transfers.
Add after your ARC (need Korean phone/bank)
- Kakao Pay / Naver Pay / Toss — payments (above)
- KakaoBank / Toss Bank — easy digital banks for foreigners
- Baemin (배민) or Coupang Eats — food delivery. Both added AI multilingual interfaces in 2026; Baemin now has English/Chinese/Japanese and an overseas-card checkout option.
- Coupang — Amazon-style shopping with next-day (often dawn) delivery
- Kakao T — taxis (~90% market share). Paste your Korean destination from Naver Map; no language barrier with the driver.
- Karrot (당근) — local secondhand marketplace
The name-matching trap (again)
Before your setup is complete
In the 2–4 week gap after arriving (before ARC/bank/phone are all live), you're not stuck:
- Naver Map, Kakao Map, Papago, KakaoTalk, Subway Korea all install and run on any data (roaming/eSIM/Wi-Fi) — only SMS verification for pay/bank apps needs a Korean number.
- Some apps accept a foreign card: look for "해외 신용카드" checkout on delivery apps, or use Shuttle (foreigner-friendly delivery). As of 2026, foreign cards also work at many Seoul subway ticket machines.
- Carry some cash for the gaps — a Korean-issued debit card (from opening a bank account) resolves most payment friction in one step.
Common questions
Why won't my foreign card work everywhere?
Many Korean systems require Korean-issued credentials to complete a transaction. A Korean debit card + Kakao/Naver Pay fixes it. Until then, keep some cash and look for "해외 신용카드" options.
Do I really need KakaoTalk?
Yes — it's how Korea communicates, pays and coordinates. Class groups, work chats, delivery updates, even some official notices run through it.
Why is Google Maps so bad here?
National data-export rules limit Google's mapping. Use Naver Map or Kakao Map — both have English modes.
Which delivery app is best for foreigners?
As of 2026, Baemin added strong multilingual support and overseas-card checkout, making it very accessible. Coupang Eats is fastest. Shuttle is the reliable no-Korean-number option.
