In short
- Busan is Korea's coastal second city — beaches, seafood, temples on cliffs, and colorful hillside villages. A totally different vibe from Seoul: salt air over neon.
- From Seoul, the KTX takes ~2h30 (city-centre to city-centre) — book ahead on busy days. Your Seoul T-money card works on Busan's metro and buses.
- The city is long and thin along the coast — Haeundae to Nampo-dong is ~45 min. Plan days geographically and don't zigzag.
- 2 days covers the essentials; 3+ lets you add a Gyeongju day trip. Best in spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct).
A ₩60,000 KTX ticket puts you in a different Korea — mountains meeting the sea, the country's best seafood, and an easygoing pace. Here's how to make the most of a weekend (or more). See also trains & KTX.
Getting there & around
- KTX/SRT ~2h30 from Seoul to Busan Station, right in the city. Book on Korail Talk / letskorail.com (or SRT) — Fri evenings, Sun afternoons and holidays sell out, so buy ahead. (Heads-up: Busan Station ticket machines don't always take foreign cards — book online.)
- Metro: 4 lines, English signage, ~₩1,450 with T-money (same card as Seoul). Runs ~5:30am–midnight.
- Buses & taxis: some top sights (Gamcheon, Yonggungsa, Taejongdae) need a bus from the nearest station; Kakao T works for taxis. Use Naver/Kakao Map.
- Where to stay: Haeundae (beach resort feel), Seomyeon (central, shopping/nightlife, best value), or Nampo/Busan Station (markets, KTX access).
Don't-miss sights
- Haeundae Beach — Korea's most famous beach, with the Blueline Park beach train & Sky Capsule (book ahead). Nearby Gwangalli has the illuminated Gwangan Bridge at night.
- Haedong Yonggungsa — a stunning Buddhist temple built on seaside cliffs; go early for sunrise and fewer crowds.
- Gamcheon Culture Village — the "Santorini of Korea," a pastel hillside of art and cafes (2–3h to walk).
- Jagalchi Market — Korea's biggest fish market; pick your seafood and eat it fresh.
- Nampo-dong & BIFF Square — film-festival heart and dense street food (try seed-stuffed hotteok, a Busan specialty).
- Spa Land (Centum City) — a luxurious take on jjimjilbang culture.
Eat
- Dwaeji gukbap (돼지국밥) — milky pork-bone rice soup, Busan's signature comfort dish (~₩9,000), everywhere around Seomyeon.
- Fresh hoe (raw fish) — served with sesame oil, garlic, and ssamjang; the Haeundae raw-fish complex is a classic.
- Milmyeon (wheat cold noodles) and seafood pancakes round out the coastal menu.
